Mahogany Table

Specifications

Measurements: 43”w x 130”l x 30”h
Material: African Mahogany

Project Description

This trestle table is made of 100” mahogany. The length was determined by the two slabs that we had to work with for the top. The top is a full 2” thick. The edges of the table top show off the marks from the sawmill, and provide both a visual detail as well as something that you want to touch. The curves on the legs were made with 15 layers of mahogany pressed in a vacuum form. The client started with three inspiration photos to show what they were looking for. From there a computer rendering was done and tweaked to arrive at this design.

Beech Bench

Specifications

Measurements: 53” wide, 30” deep, 32” high
Material: Beech

Project Description

Lemonade from lemons: This front porch bench is made from four beech wood slabs recovered from a local tree that came down in the 2018 tornado. The challenge was to find all the parts from the four slabs. A design by the client was the start of a beautiful thing. There is not a single metal fastener in this bench. All the joinery is dovetails, and mortice and tenon. The tenons on the arms are wedged with walnut, the rear ones left proud. A mock-up of the ends, with a final fitting with the client allowed us to find all the parts in the four slabs. Lots of head-scratching involved, but it was worth it.

The epitome of custom furniture, this table was made completely from the wood reclaimed from the client’s cottage property. The top is spectacularly figured maple. The base is red oak with a bead of the curly maple used for the top. No hardware is used in the base, just traditional mortice and tenon joinery.

Davidson Vanity

Specifications

Wood Type: Pine
Measurements: 22”w x 29”h x 18”d
Made In: Ottawa, Ontario
Status: Sold

Project Description

This vanity cabinet was made to fit the sink that the client had reclaimed from an older house. The vanity had to fit into the under-side of the sink. The bathroom is trimmed in pine with a variety of pine details. The answer was to keep the cabinet simple, but complement the detail of the simple angled bevel on the baseboards, so this detail was used in the raised panels of the cabinet. The door of the cabinet is actually on the side, at the client’s request, and has a push to release latch so no visible hardware was used. However, on the front of the cabinet I used a knot to look like a door pull. The cabinet features close attention to detail on selection of wood grains and details to make all parts. The joinery is all mortice and tenon on all parts.

Musician Desk

Specifications

Wood Type:

Walnut

Measurements:

87” wide x 26” deep x 30” high. (40” run-off)

Description

This desk is for a musician and sound mixer.  Every element was custom designed to fit the keyboard and computer equipment. Glen worked with the client through every detail.  The tops are solid walnut.  The run-off ‘disappears’ under the desk top.  The drawer box and cabinet for the computers are coated with glossy white lacquer.  The combinations of colours complement the custom made chromed legs.

The drawers are maple and include hand-cut dovetails on all corners.  One of the drawers contains a power bar for charging phones.  The drawer box ‘floats’ below the desk for a very unique look.

Thanks to Gary’s Custom Cycle in Ottawa for the amazing chrome work.

When I first contacted Glen, I told him about my very specific idea for a music studio desk. He worked diligently and patiently with me during the design process to make sure I was happy before he started building. Glen spent the time and paid attention to every detail: from the selection of the desk top boards, to the curvature of the chrome legs, to the floating drawers with a built-in power bar... all were captured to my exact specifications. Glen has incredible craftsmanship and I couldn't be happier with the desk. It was truly a pleasure to hire him and I'd recommend him to anyone wanting custom work!

Cherry Desk

Specifications

Wood Type:

Cherry and cherry veneer

Measurements:

67″ high, 105″ wide

Description

This desk was made to complement other pieces in the room. The design and moldings are similar to other pieces I made for the room and the legs were turned similar to the details of an antique cabinet that sits near it.

Included with the desk was a matching cover for the lateral filing cabinet creating another run-off and cable management hidden underneath.

Glen was referred to us as we were looking for a wood-worker who could help us rebuild fixtures and furniture in our heritage house in the wake of a serious fire. Glen was just the person we needed.
He did a first rate job, and (with Donna's help, very important!) the two of them installed each one with great care and attention to detail.

Californian Redwood Coffee Table Legs

Specifications

Wood Type:

California Redwood

Measurements:

14”w x 32”d x 16”h when completed

Description

The challenge here is to figure out a design for the legs to complement the California redwood burl that will be the table top for a coffee table. In these photos I am trying to find a design that works with the shape and the character of the redwood burl, without the legs becoming the focal point. These mock – ups made of scrap wood are to help visualize the correct hight, spacing, angles and thickness of the legs. Sometimes the design process is the longest part of the job!

Ash & Butternut boardroom table

Ash & Butternut Boardroom Table

Ash & Butternut boardroom table

Specifications

Wood Type:

Ash & Butternut

Measurements:

9.2’w x 42”d x 44”h

Description

The client liked the rough cut look of the wood when it was purchased, and wanted to mimic that look along the edges of the table.

I never thought I’d take a chainsaw to furniture before, but it was the best way to get the finish the client wanted. The table turned out beautifully and with metal machined legs is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.
